Insert support arm into Ching sling forward loop.
Wrap support arm around sling.
Insert support hand between sling and stock and wedge it against the swivel.
In standing firing position.
When install your Ching, add a half-twist clockwise (when looking down at the front swivel) to the front end of the strap when you attach it. This half-twist will allow the sling to lay flat against your wrist as it wraps around it, instead of having its edge bite into your arm. This clockwise twist direction is for right-handers; left-handers should use the opposite direction.
For a hunter, a quickly-assumed, rock-steady “slung” position ought to be at the top of your bag of tricks. So, how do we use the Ching to help attain this?
First, put your arm in the sling as you go from standing ready to whatever position you have selected. You should be in the sling by the time you hit the position. Second, make sure your support elbow is as directly under the rifle as possible (with any type of loop sling). Avoid positions where that elbow is well to the outside of the rifle. The reason is that the sling only works to hold up the rifle if gravity pulls the rifle in a direction that would cause the opening of your elbow joint angle (what the sling loop prevents). This is what happens when your elbow is under the rifle. If it’s off to the outside, gravity does not work directly against your elbow. Instead, there is a tendency for the rifle to fall sideways away from your support arm toward the trigger hand side. This produces a sideways pivot of your support arm, flexing from the shoulder and pivoting over the elbow point, identical to the motion you try to make in arm-wrestling. Your support arm tilts over sideways with the elbow joint angle remaining unchanged.
The sling has no control over this type of motion. Thus, the rifle will tend to fall sideways (rightwards for a right-hander) and also forward off of your shoulder, especially after recoil. This works exactly the same way in prone, so make sure you understand this principle and apply it to all sling use where the elbow is rested on something solid. This may cause some pain in the muscles behind your shoulder until they get used to being stretched that far (just ignore those people who claim the sling is an infernal torture instrument designed by evil sadists!). And make sure you lean as far forward in your position as physically possible, so your upper body can rest itself against the sling.
One caveat: use of a shooting sling will put some stress on the fore-end of your rifle, and may influence the barrel enough to cause a change in your zero, if you got your zero from a benchrest.. The way I deal with this is to assume that any shot that is long will require the sling, and any shot that is taken without the sling will probably be very close (say, from standing at 25-75 yards).
